Terracotta Platter
Here's a great way to transform an ordinary, inexpensive terracotta saucer into an attractive, useful platter.

1
Apply three coats of sealer to both sides of the saucer. Allow to dry between each coat (approximately 20 minutes between coats).

2
Paint the inside rim of the saucer with a colour that will complement the paper you are using to decorate the platter.

3
Seal your wrapping paper on both sides with several coats of sealer, alternating the brush stroke direction for each coat and allowing drying time between each coat. It's advisable to choose a reasonably thick paper that won't tear easily.

4
Apply decoupage glue (this is a strong, slow-drying glue, ideal if you need to make some adjustments to your design - see below to make your own) to both sides of the paper and position in the centre of the saucer. Using your fingertips, rub from the centre of the paper towards the edges to remove any air bubbles and excess glue.

5
Use a roller to press the paper firmly in place, being careful not to crease it. Wipe the excess glue away using a damp cloth. Allow to dry.

6
Highlight the rim of your saucer with gold paint or another suitable colour. Apply several coats of clear varnish to protect your new platter.

Care instructions: to clean your platter, wipe it over with a damp cloth. It's best not to put it in your dishwasher as it may destroy the seal.
