Mirrors are great for fixing your hair or touching up make-up but they can also make a great feature for your wall. A few decorations and a touch of paint can give the plainest mirror a whole new look as well as adding depth and interest to a room.

To personalise your mirror, decorate it with mementos from a trip or special day or create a picture that reflects a hobby or interest. Creating your 3D mirror is easy — just use small, light-weight decorations (they are sandwiched between the mirror and glass so don't use anything fragile). We've chosen a fishing theme as a gift for the keen angler in your family.

STEP BY STEP:
1 Start work on the face of the mirror. Place the mirror flat on the table and arrange your fish cut outs in a "fish catching" scene. Make sure you paint the back of the fish black and allow to dry before sticking down otherwise you'll get a reflection. We painted our own fish on watercolour paper but you can simply cut the pictures from magazines or wrapping paper.
2 Arrange decorations in your own design. In our case you have the jumping fish hooked by the fishing line. Secure the fishing line in place with small dots of glue. Along the bottom we painted water, but you can stick down more decorations such as plastic weed or sea sponge.
3 Whether your frame is old or new, you may want to decorate it. We gave ours a quick coat of Burnt Sienna and polished it with clear wax.
4 Once all the decorations are in place and the glue is dry, place the glass sheet over the top. Hold this down while you add the frame, sandwiching the mirror and glass.
5 Secure the back of the mirror using Push Points. These are small metal "star" shaped tacks that push into the sides of the frame to hold the glass and mirror in place. For our mirror, we evenly spaced five or six down each 800mm side and four or five along the 500mm sides. Due to the size and weight of our picture we used a Backing (Box) Board to secure the glass and mirror.

Remember, you can decorate your mirror with any theme you like — wedding mementos or souvenirs from a special holiday.
