BOX DESIGN
1 Using a pencil and ruler, measure and mark the pattern (see diagrams, below) onto the cardboard. Remember, the pattern is for a box that will be 25cm x 25cm x 25cm deep (We also made some boxes that were 20cm x 20cm). If you would like a smaller or larger box just alter the measurements.
2 Cut around the pattern with a Stanley knife and steel ruler. Lightly score the cardboard along the fold lines but don't cut all the way through. This will make folding easy and neat.
3 Fold the box and lid into shape.
4 Glue or use double sided tape along the tabs to secure the box in place.
DECORATING
When it comes to decorating your box there are few limitations. You can try your own creative designs or use some of ours.
GARDEN THEME
1 Using a glue gun, attach the leaves to the four sides of the box (don't worry about the bottom of the box, it needs to sit flat). Overlap the leaves as you go so that you completely cover the white cardboard underneath. Be careful not to use too much glue as it will burn and mark the leaves.
2 Cover the lid in green tissue paper.
3 Mark the centre point of the lid. Push a pen through this mark to create a hole then glue the sunflower into the hole.
ORIENTAL THEME
1 Cover the outside of the lid and box with white Japanese rice paper.
2 Paint the lid in background black then glue a sheet of script paper to the centre of the lid and down the centre of two of the sides.
3 Tie a piece of red fabric around the box and attach a pair of black chopsticks through the knot at the top. You can also add a Japanese gift tag.
AFRICAN THEME
1 Measure and mark the pattern of the box onto the back of the fake fur and cut out. Glue the fur onto the box.
2 Cover the lid in brown paper.
3 Cut African animals out of travel brochures and glue onto some scrap cardboard. Create a hole through the top of the animals and push some thread through the hole so you can hang them off the raffia. Tie this around the box.
BEJEWELLED THEME
1 Cover the box and lid with blue satin fabric
2 Glue the coloured jewels all over the lid.
WOVEN THEME
1 Use a ribbon with a width that divides evenly into one of the boxes sides (we used 23mm wide ribbon for our 20cm x 20cm box). Cut pieces of ribbon long enough to extend from inside the rim of the box, down one side, across the bottom and up the opposite side.
2 Glue ribbons side by side, inside the rim of one edge of the box. Wrap them smoothly down the side, across the bottom and up the other side, gluing the loose ends inside the opposite rim.
3 Using a second set of ribbons, weave the bottom of the box one ribbon at a time. Pull the ends up the two remaining bare sides and glue them inside the box.
4 Cut equal lengths of ribbon to the perimeter of the box (plus 1 inch) and weave horizontally. Glue these ends under a vertical ribbon.
5 Weave the lid in the same fashion.
