Sometimes it's hard to find that perfect design for your rug or carpet. We show you how to create your own designer rug using coloured dyes.
Select a suitable carpet piece. Remnants can be bought from carpet suppliers. Choose wool or nylon and avoid acrylic and polypropylene, as these can't be dyed easily. Light, neutral colours are best.
Draw out your design on paper first. Use a ruler and pen and draw the grid lines of the design onto the carpet. Mark with masking tape. Run the tape along both edges of the grid lines. Then use more tape and newspaper (or old towels) to cover the areas not to be dyed.
The liquid concentrate dyes are available in five colours, which can be mixed to create variations. Place in a plastic spray gun container. Wearing gloves, test spray a scrap piece of carpet first.
Spray your dark colours first, between the masking tape strips. Don't apply too much dye, otherwise it will bleed under the tape.
Remove the tape and paper immediately and leave to dry.
Add other colours following the same procedure, allowing to dry each time, and removing and adding fresh tape and paper.
