With the help of Ms Megabyte, we show you how easy it is to create your own digital photo album, using your home computer, a camera, scanner and easy-to-use software.

Advantages Of Digital Photo Albums

1
You can send individual photos to friends via email. They can also access your whole digital album via a web page. This is a lot cheaper than having to pay for reprints to send out to your relatives.

2
Digital photos last longer than traditional photos because they do not deteriorate with age. Images in a digital photo album will always remain consistent in quality.

3
You will be able to find your photos more easily because you can create a data base to categorise each photo, eg by dates, places or people.

4
You can be creative and manipulate your images using simple software. For example you can change the colouring in your photos, turn colour prints into black and white, alter the contrast between brightness and darkness, crop photos or add in different backgrounds.

Method

1
Make sure you've got the right equipment. Your computer will need to have at least 32 megabytes of ram (32Mb). Ram refers to the "working" memory capacity of your computer. Most new computers will meet this requirement.

If you have an older computer you can buy an additional 16mb of memory for about $150.00. You will also need to have the right computer program that will allow you to create the digital photo album. One such program is "Expert Photo Studio", distributed by Dataflow and available at all good software retailers for around $19.95.

2
Select the photos you wish to have in your digital album.

3
Place a photo face down onto the scanner (which looks like a mini photocopier) and close the lid. Click the "start scanning" button on your computer screen.

4
Once the image is transferred to your computer screen, manipulate the photo if you wish and then save the image. (When you save the image you can also save references for each photo. References may include dates, places or people).

5
Continue steps 3 and 4 until you have entered all your photos into the album. You can have as many references as you want for each photo and as many photos as you want in a digital album.

6
Once you have created your digital photo album you can then print the photos, email them to friends or create a web site of your photo album.

Tip

When you get photos processed at a Kodak shop, you can just check the box on the form for 'KODAK Picture CD' with any 35 mm or Advanced Photo System color print film. You'll then receive your prints, negatives, and a handy index print (which shows a smaller view of all of your shots, similar to colour negatives), along with a CD that includes your pictures stored as high-resolution digital images plus photo software! This allows you to put the CD straight into your PC and bypass the entire scanning step altogether.
