Our House Magazine’s features editor, Julia Richardson, shows us 10 different ways on how to turn an average storage box into a very useful item for around the house.

1
Add castors! The box is now a storage box that can be filled with bits ‘n pieces (dominoes, playing cards, etc.) and wheeled underneath your coffee table.

2
Fill the box with sand or pebbles and insert an array of candles - it can now be used as a centrepiece for a casual, outdoor entertaining setting.

3
Add some stylish handles to the box to form a handy drink tray.

4
Turn the box upside down, add a towel rail to the underside and it becomes a shelf and towel rail for the bathroom.

5
String boxes together and hang them from a tree to become a set of outdoor shelves (for bread and fruit and so on).

6
Paint the inside bases of four boxes with Aqua Glaze paint (very shiny) and install the boxes vertically on a wall so that they become storage squares or display cases. They can be used to hold a small vase with flowers, books or whatever - limited only by your imagination.

7
Attach a box perpendicularly to a wall to form a wall-mounted drawer. Mounted next to the front door it can be used to hold keys, mail, etc.

8
Paint a couple of boxes and add label holders to turn them into document trays.

9
Attach the box to a child’s bedroom door (vertically) and fill it with all sorts of personal stuff so that it becomes a “This Room Belongs To...” sort of niche.

10
Add little feet to the underside of the box, paint or stain the timber and it becomes a fruit bowl.

Cost
The box is around 30cm x 30cm and 15cm high. It costs $29.00 from IKEA.
