Even in the politically correct '90s it's unusual to find female cabinetmakers. We visited the creator of many magnificent pieces, Martina Rienzner, a professional who runs her own joinery workshop in Sydney.

Martina was also runner-up in the 1997 Women in Construction Awards. She migrated to Australia from Germany in 1990 under the Skilled Migration Scheme and although she was a competent cabinetmaker, found it impossible to get a job in the male-dominated industry, so she went out on her own.

Martina specialises in high-quality, one-off furniture designs, custom-made to each individual client brief. She works with architects, designers and private agents, providing a professional and reliable service.

Martina says that the pursuit of quality is an important part of her trade. She believes that a high-quality piece is functional, durable and beautiful, making the client as happy as the cabinetmaker.

She uses a wide range of small machines and traditional tools to achieve a high-quality finish. A variety of different timbers are used, specifically chosen to suit a job. The workshop is very neat, structured and efficient.

Martina employs two full-time and two part-time staff in her workshop. Martin Tomasoni, one of the carpenters who works for Martina, says that "it is great working for a woman - she is very considerate and great to talk to".
