With just a scrap of wallpaper Karman Grech can re-create the design, separate each colour onto silk screens and hand-print it onto 10-metre rolls, one colour at a time. He's also commissioned to design new wallpaper for people who can't find what they want on the market, or to co-ordinate with the colours, carpets, upholstery, curtains - even the era of a house. He has a studio in Sydney's Brighton-Le-Sands, where he does his designing, and a shop in Campsie, where the printing is done.

Karman works out the design in pencil first, then fills in the pattern with water-based paints. This work requires a steady hand and lots of patience. The smallest sample Karman has ever had to work from was a 2cm square geometric design. He collects all the information and then works around that to copy the style of the print.

The number of colours used will determine the amount of time required for the job. If the design involves three colours it would take about two hours to make six rolls. But some designs use as many as 12 colours, which means 12 screens are required, so it is very labour-intensive. Fans are used to speed up the drying process and by the time the end of a roll is reached, the start is dry, so the next colour can be added.
One of Karman's projects we looked at involved reproducing a design to match the wallpaper in an existing 19th-century Sydney hotel. The great thing about Karman's work is that the modern paper base ensures the new wallpaper will last a very long time.
