Reg takes a look at a glass factory which bends, slumps, laminates and paints glass to produce furniture. Aussie Glass is a family business which specialises in the manufacturing of glass furniture. The Minto factory has been custom built to ensure the production processes run at maximum efficiency. Peter Rays, General Manager at Aussie Glass guides Reg through the factory and follows the process of a sheet of glass transforming into a piece of furniture.

Firstly, a large sheet of glass is cut to size on the cutting table. The glass is transferred to the slumping machine to be rounded to make a coffee table. If the glass has a design it is transferred to the design table.

The design is carved on a large bed of sand in a slumping furnace using various tools such as brushes and metal instruments. For the pattern to be permanent, the table top is then "slumped" at 830°c where it becomes soft, and is easy to manipulate. The glass is kept in the furnace for 3-4 hours allowing time for the glass to take to the new design. Once the temperature of the glass has returned to room temperature, the piece is hosed down. The legs of the table are then bent in a giant kiln at 630°c.

The last process is to colour the table top which is one of the newest technologies in decorative glass production. A metal mirror mist is applied to the back of the table which tones down the intense colour of the initial application. It is liquid metal which is sprayed onto the underside of the table and needs a few hours curing time before the table is complete. This glass table cost $1,500.
