Bamboo, as a building and decorating material, seems to be making a bit of a comeback lately. More and more bamboo and related products are being used for a growing variety of purposes. Already on the show we've featured bamboo flooring and recently Shirl used bamboo ply panels in the workshop. Now we visit "The House of Bamboo" in Sydney's South.

Bamboo's popularity has been growing for a number of reasons. Its authentic Asian appeal means it's considered stylish and also well suited to our environment. But more importantly, as a renewable resource it's kinder to the environment so a good alternative to timber. While many think bamboo is a tree, it's actually a grass and that's why it grows so quickly and re-generates itself. Another product from the grass family is Natureed which has been on the market for around 18 months. It's made of reeds which are highly resilient to moisture and termite attack.

Mark Snyders started "The House of Bamboo" back in 1973, influenced by his recent travels in Asia. The style of outdoor and beach furniture at the time didn't seem to suit the Australian lifestyle and climate so Mark began exporting bamboo and coming up with different applications for it. The range is expanding still and will soon be accompanied by lightweight aluminium stands which will further reduce the costs of the current systems.

Bamboo products include fencing, sunshades, bamboo rod screens to hide unsightly items like pool filters, and a range of blinds and wall coverings. You can buy these products ready made or the poles and slats separately to have a go yourself. New designs that Mark is working on include a banana chair and a bamboo slat bed with built in side tables.
