Finding a location for artist Evert Ploeg's new house and studio was proving difficult, until Evert decided to look a little closer to home. With very little building experience, Evert and his father set about creating a barn-like studio on the back of the old family home. The results are impressive.
The objective was to create a space that was big and fairly informal, conducive to painting and basic in principle. With help from a builder friend and lots of advice from hardware stores, Evert learned from his mistakes and has continued to decorate the barn since its beginnings ten years ago.
The barn is full of unusual touches, there's the couch made from old railway sleepers, the enormous window Evert found at an auction and the ceiling lining made from old potato sacks and wool bales. Most of the other products came from demolition houses, like the front and back doors and the barn doors which were remodelled from old garage doors.
The lining of the ceiling is old wool bales and potato sacks. When Evert was bagging the interior walls with lime and cement, he realised the sacks were the same distance as the rafters so incorporated them as a cheap alternative.
He may be new to the building caper, but when it comes to art, Evert is an old hand. He's entered the Archibald Prize competition five times and won the People's Choice award in 1999 for his portrait of actress Deborah Mailman which funnily enough is painted on wool bales.
And although quite different in style, Evert is also an accomplished book cover and advertising artist. He sees his barn as a sculpture he can keep adding to over the years.
