An ugly vermiculite ceiling, worn tired carpet, old venetian blinds and no cupboard to hang clothes: this bedroom is in desperate need of an overhaul from top to bottom. Tara will begin with the ceiling and give some useful advice on what options are available if you have a vermiculite ceiling. The new look is a cool and stylish contemporary bedroom fit for a bachelor.
Before- Window with old venetian blinds and curtains
- Portable hanging rack and basket for clothes
- 1 queen bed, 2 side tables with drawers
- Old carpet on floor
- Vermiculite ceiling
During- Walls painted Dulux Classic Suede and back of door Dulux Malt Shake. Vermiculite ceiling painted white as below.
- Old carpet replaced with a new product, Alloc Truewood in Southern Mahogany, a dark timber. These floorboards have a glueless system and lock together, aligning automatically to give a flat and stable floor.
- A sheet of dark wood melamine, pre-finished (cut to size: 1200mm) batoned to the floor. This will be installed facing the window and where the hanging rail currently sits. Approx. 900mm gap will be left either side of the sheet. On the reverse side of the sheet a stainless steel rod will be attached to the wall (800mm length) to hang clothes and two shelves (800 x 600mm) will also be installed under the rail.
- Queen bed moved around to face door. Material remaining from wardrobe used to make a head board (1600 x 1200mm) and two bedside tables.
- Old venetian blinds and curtains replaced with natural coloured fabric curtains. A sheer voile placed underneath the outer curtains for privacy and both hung on a wooden pole with rings.
- Room dressed with two chrome lamps with natural coloured shades to match curtains, three black and white framed prints on wall and new ivory coloured linen for the bed.
After- Rich and warm colour on the walls and new white ceiling instantly lift the room.
- The new floorboards complete the tranformation.
- Stylish natural weave curtains and chrome accessories complete the room.
- The owner does not have many clothes so the clothing storage is a stylish and inexpensive solution to a walk-in wardrobe.
- Dark wood bedside tables and co-ordinating head board brings a modern style to the room.
What is vermiculite? - problematic surface, commonly used in the late 1960' and 70' apartment buildings for sound proofing
- cheap to apply
- Its name was derived from the Latin 'vermiculare' which means to breed worms.
- Vermiculite is commonly used in its exfoliated form. Exfoliated vermiculite has a large internal air volume and therefore possesses excellent thermal and sound insulation characteristics.
- It occurs in crystalline plates, measuring as much as 23cm across and 15cm thick threads with a vermicular motion like a mass of small worms. The volume increases as much as 16 times and the colour changes to a silvery or golden hue. It is ground into pellet form.
- It has numerous and diverse applications including plaster board manufacture, horticulture, animal feed, packing materials, pesticide, lightweight concrete, fire protection, insulating concrete, loft insulation and sound deterrence, hence its wide use in apartment blocks.
- No real hazardous substances in vermiculite ceilings.
PAINTING A VERMICULITE CEILING: STEP BY STEP- clean the vermiculite; brush over with a broom to remove cob webs, etc.
- spray the vermiculite with Dulux oil based sealer binder. This helps bind the porous surface together and seals the surface for the paint. The vermiculite will tend to soak up a lot of the sealer binder. Allow 48 hours for the sealer binder to dry (oil-based requires extra drying time).
- spray the paint using a spray gun. Spray guns can be hired from Dulux or Kennards Hire for around $120, however it is recommended you find a professional painter who is skilled in using a spray gun, due to the difficulty of the vermiculite surface. If not applied correctly, the finish may look uneven and appear darker in areas.
Time Taken Total 4 days (plus 2 days drying time) Carpentry (Making melamine wardrobe, side tables and headboard) 1 day Painting walls & sewing curtains 1 day Vermiculite ceilings (allow 2 days drying time for sealer binder) 1 ½ days Rip Up Carpet & Laying Floor ½ day
Difficulty Level 3:5 Carpentry skills for building, tricky vermiculite ceilings, laying floor.
