Morgan Barry and Clinton Cole of B+C Design Construct have built a weekender in the bush that makes the most of the view, has lots of space and best of all gives new life to the timber from an old bridge.

Morgan and Clinton, architectural graduates from Sydney University, have come up with a stunning design for this bush weekender. Once Morgan and Clinton saw the site its potential became clear, a high bush setting on a 40 acre block. All that needed to be done was to demolish the derelict house that had been destroyed by termites and to clear a couple of trees and the overgrown bush around the site. The house is very open plan and spacious like its surroundings.

The house represents a year of hard work. Morgan and Clinton lived in a shed on the site during construction.

The most interesting feature is the exposed framework, constructed from red Ironbark timber, rescued from the side of the road. Morgan and Clinton found the timber on the way to the site, and learned it was free for the taking. This was just one way they kept the cost down, along with employing local labour when they needed to and making the most of other cheaper materials available in the area. By doing the majority of the building work themselves, including the welding of steel in the frame, they also saved money.

According to Morgan, the way the house is put together is a special part of the design. The structure is exposed, showing the beautiful recycled timber, steel reinforcement and industrial bolts. This work all took a lot longer than usual, but the result is well worth it. The bi-folding doors opening onto the deck add the open and spacious feel of the main room, and invite you out to the entertaining area on the deck with a slim rectangular pond.

The open style and amount of space is perfect for the couple it was designed for, and they even called to thank Morgan and Clinton on their first night there.
