One of our most unusual finds is a country retreat south of Perth, nestled among treetops, with panoramic views of the Dunsborough coastline. It is owned by three couples who wanted a communal living area with the privacy of separate sleeping quarters. The result is a series of pavilions linked by a dramatic 15m bridge, walkway and spiral staircase. Reg meets owner Sami Renouf who oversaw the interior design.
The house is built of limestone with timber cladding of Tasmanian Oak and Black Butt and natural raw edge timber features. The owners wanted simple lines because they didn't want it to date and needed functionality and durability. The end result is a country retreat with a slight industrial feel using curved steel for the roof of the living pod a local invention called Acoustic Corruline.
The middle living pod has a three car garage underneath with access via a spiral staircase onto the balcony and through sliding doors to the kitchen, living and dining rooms. There's also a mezzanine level used as a TV area and powder room. This pod is open plan to maximise communal living. During winter, they hibernate and cook or visit the local winery. In summer, there is cocktail hour on the balcony and lots of reading, relaxing, surfing and visiting galleries.
Access to the first sleeping pod, the Bridge room, is via a 15m walkway that overlaps with the trees. Above it is the Tree Top room, another sleeping pod with ensuite which has the best views. Underneath is the third pod which is the coolest. Each room has minimal but different décor with good quality furnishings and specially made bedspreads. When plans and budget are finalised, they will be building a fourth interlocked pod as a home entertainment room with sun deck, pool and tepanyaki grill.
