The unique Gold Coast development, Palazzo Versace, sheds a whole new light on the term "luxury apartment". The 72 condominiums and 205 room hotel opened in September 2000 and were designed and decorated by the Italian fashion house Versace in partnership with property developer Sunland Group as a monument to the late Gianni Versace. The first of its kind, with another six planned around the world, Shirl checks out a condominium...

It was Soheil Abedian of the Sunland Group who went to Milan in 1997 to propose the development. An Australian-educated architect, he is very interested in baroque style and neoclassicism. The Versace House agreed on the basis that their own architect come out from Italy and design the interior. The style was embraced by the late designer Gianni Versace and further developed and refined specifically for Palazzo Versace by his sister, Donatella.

The hotel's ornate ceilings, decorative walls, colonnades and luxurious fittings and facades are reminiscent of the grandeur of European palaces, typical of the late Renaissance period. Interiors, exteriors, furnishings and accessories were created by Versace specifically for the development as well as selected items chosen from the Versace Home Collection including furniture, rugs, lamps, fabrics and decorative objects.

The Versace corporate logo, the Medusa, was inspired by a sculpture found in Gianni's family garden in Reggio Calabria, Italy. Featured throughout the rooms, it also appears on the china, cutlery, cushions, linen and accessories.

Most of the finishing materials, including the generous use of marble and granite and mosaics, have been imported directly from Italy. Artisans from Italy flew out working side by side with local builders. There are cupboards full of porcelain produced exclusively for Versace by the prestigious Rosenthal factories.

The 72 privately-owned condominiums sold out even before completion at record Gold Coast prices for a total of $99 million. They ranged from $1.25 million up to a record $4.9 million for one of the penthouses. The Versace furniture and décor package cost between $200,000 and $400,000 on top of the purchase price. About 70% of the purchasers were Australians.
