This family did not want a conventional house but rather a livable viewing platform to capture jaw-dropping views. Engelen Moore Architects conceived a hilltop verandah, enclosed by glass and steel, perched on an escarpment high above the NSW south coast. Rebecca chats with Ian Moore of Engelen Moore Architects and shows us through this exciting living platform.

Just two hours drive from Sydney, on the southern side of Saddleback Mountain, 50 metres below the summit, you will find the hilltop house. Built on a rural lot, the house has 180 degree views of the coast, Seven Mile beach and the dense Saddleback Mountain. It's home to Maria and Peter Rose and their two teenage children.

Once a favourite picnic spot for the family, they relocated from a large formal house and are very happy with the results of their project. They wanted to capture the view, without doing too much damage to the original paddock. It was built on a difficult site, but architect Ian Moore elevated the house so that strong winds can flow under and over it and the underfloor heating offers year round comfort.

The interior is divided into three zones: eastern for the parents, western for the teenagers and a meeting zone in between which houses the kitchen, living and dining areas. Two storerooms are located underneath the house and are used as a hideaway for the children and their friends. There is no designated front door and sliding aluminium framed glass doors at the front and rear allow the house to be fully open. When the doors are open, the entire living area becomes an open verandah space.
