A flair for design and a bit of determination has allowed David Sharpe to transform a dingy studio flat into a stylish living space. It's hard to believe this entire apartment was just the laundry and kitchen of an old Sydney home. It was in a bad state of disrepair but that didn't deter David from strapping on his tool belt.
Having bought the apartment, David spent a couple of months considering the renovations before he finally began. He started by blocking up the entry door, prising open the back doors that opened onto the yard, and removing all but one of the interior walls. He turned the kitchen into a bedroom, complete with queen-size bed, built-in wardrobe and ensuite.
The old bathroom was transformed into an open-plan kitchen, featuring a 30mm thick Carrara marble benchtop, glass shelving, and a green glass splashback behind the sink. The old bathroom window was concealed by a sheet of stainless steel laid across the side wall.
By building a garden wall, David turned the backyard into a private courtyard. He covered marine ply timber with chicken wire, then rendered it to look like stone. A tall French oak features in the space, which is finished with an iron door and a large mirrored window. It is paved with reconstituted stone and laid at an angle to disguise the unevenness of the area. The lean-to shed was given a pair of beautiful antique Spanish oak doors, and turned into a laundry and storage room.
While the apartment is tiny, David has made the most of the space available by building overhead cupboards into the three metre false ceiling in the main room. He also had wrap around storage built into the ceiling of the bedroom.
