Shirl visits Peter Hook, an artist with a passion for sculpting timber animals that reflect his rural surroundings . At his country property outside Melbourne, Peter works full time on his autobiographical pieces and has regular exhibitions in both the city and country.
After teaching fine arts for 25 years, Peter submitted to his rural longings and tried vineyards and a fish farm before focusing on his art. His work appeals to a clientele "either wealthy with a heart, or poor with a heart".
"My work retains my childlike state of mind. It's not conscious but it has a lot to do with my memories. I don't make things for the sake of it but for the connections. For example, I sold a piece recently called "Emu Leaving Restaurant" to a Toorak woman who lives in a grand place filled with bronze animals. I wasn't sure what inspired her to buy it and found out later that part of a sign I'd used was from an old beach kiosk she'd lived near previously."
Peter makes his 3 dimensional pieces from offcuts of timber and discarded materials which he gets from friends, neighbours or the tip. He chalks the drawing, then uses a small grinding tool to refine and finish up. The finished product is glued, screwed or bolted and occasionally painted, from household paints he picks up at the markets.
Examples of his work are; "Blue Moon", "Kangaroo Cycling", "Shark Letterbox", "Cockatoo Dreaming", "Shearing the Ram" and "Kingsford Smith visiting Elm Park". His prices range from $500 to $2000 depending on the size of the piece.
