How many times have you wished you could just slide that wall away and create a whole new living area? Well now you can!
A new and exciting style of living, where your space is no longer determined or cramped by solid walls is emerging in Sydney. Under construction now is an apartment block, designed with 'sliding walls', so you can transform your living area into a spacious open plan or into separate living rooms.
The people behind the idea, Trudi Scymour and Keith Glover, are partners in the Form Follows Function team, which has recently designed the Lumina Apartments in Eastern Sydney.
Trudi and Keith have been working together for the past nine years as architect/interior designers. They also design and build furniture.
Their idea for sliding walls and doors stems from traditional Japanese architecture. The style is also similar to that of the famous Rietveld/Schroder house built in the Netherlands, where the upper floor has moveable walls to make one expansive space, or four separate rooms.
Trudi and Keith have used the sliding walls before, in a beach house at McMasters Beach and a semi in Bondi. Many people are drawn to this, and Keith believes the main attraction is the lack of space in most apartments.
The sliding walls are made of frosted glass with aluminium frames. These walls are not soundproof, as there is a small gap at the bottom and the top. They are meant to act as screens dividing the spaces.
The building they are redesigning was originally an office block. Keith and Trudi are collaborating with architect Eugene Marchese on the exterior of the building, but are designing the interior themselves.
The new building will be a sleek lined apartment block, with windows for residents to enjoy the stunning harbour views. The exterior will be darkly coloured, with contrasting lush glass mosaics. Balconies and large expanses of glass will also adorn the block, setting it apart from the surrounding buildings.
The block is not only residential, but will house retail and commercial space as well as a gym. The block even has its very own magazine, so potential buyers can discover the essence of the East Sydney atmosphere.
