When Shirl visited these two men back in 1994, they'd just begun their own furniture company, turning recycled fence palings into unusual pieces of furniture. Well, Geelong brothers Ian and Andrew Royce have come a long way since then. Now their business is in full swing and their furniture is even more wacky than ever — and it's made out of more than just old fences.

When the Royce brother's first started up their business, they were told they wouldn't last six months. They began by selling their furniture at the Sunday markets, and it "took off like a bullet". In fact it became so successful that Andrew left his career as an accountant, and Ian left his job as a chef.

They recently reviewed their range after more companies making similar, but cheaper products emerged. One new product Ian came up with was a butcher's block. He had to hide it from Andrew who was dead against the idea, as he thought it wouldn't sell. However he's come out with a top quality, easy to use and good-looking block that's commercial-grade.

They make their furniture out of Monterey Pine from New Zealand, with a smooth finish so that's easy to wipe down. The Royce brothers still love recycled materials, and fix odd bits and ends to their furniture to add interest. They've used brass taps, old forks and Victorian door knobs as handles, and cast-iron oven doors for cupboard doors. They even stick old postage stamps from the 1920s onto the furniture to add that feel of antiquity.

As for the business side of things, Ian does the designs and prototypes, while Andrew manages the factory. They don't do commissions and there are 12-14 pieces in the range.

"Wacky furniture" retails from $299 for a lamp table to $2,500 for a TV cupboard. The butcher's block and accessories range from $100 for a pot rack to $1,300 for a large decorative block.
