Colour can change the appearance and atmosphere of any room. Different colours add character and emotion. So, it should come as no surprise that the Director of Sydney's School of Colour and Design, has a home with a life of its own.

A believer of Feng Shui, Prue has a mirror in the entrance of her home. She also likes the way it reflects the gardens. The terrace is furnished with cane chairs and bright blue and orange cushions, overlooking a sparkling pool.

Prue added a dado rail to make the long, thin lounge room appear wider. It also divides the two shades of blue used to colour the room. It was no easy task finding a matching rail for the ceiling moulds. The blue walls and grey carpet create a relaxing, calming atmosphere as well as a sense of comfort. The intention of the design is to be informal, so family and friends can relax together.

The sitting room is similar in colour, but the mood is changed with the addition of pink and blue cushions. Prue uses different coloured cushions as a cheap and effective way of changing the mood in any room. During spring and summer, the windows are draped in Wisteria.

The dining room and kitchen are the hub of the household. This is where the family eat, talk, entertain guests and sit to do their homework. The décor is fun and stimulating, with teal (green) and blue walls. Yellow doors lead to the master bedroom, while red doors open to reveal the kids, bedrooms.

Prue's background is in Graphic Design and Colour Consulting and she's been the Director of the School of Colour and Design for 18 years. Established in 1983, it is the only independent art college in Australia that specialises in Colour, Design and Creativity. To Prue, working without training is like going to France without French.

Prue's Advice for Choosing Colours
  • Take your time.
  • Paint large sample boards (1m x 1m) of possible colours and sit them in the intended room. This will allow you to see how the colour will be affected by the room's lighting.
  • Look to nature to see the coordinating of colours and tones.
  • Consult other members in the household.
  • Dimmer lights and candles add to the mood of a room and change the look of colours.
