'A Tad Trendi' and 'Funky Furniture' are two businesses operating on the Gold Coast. The creators are a team of young artists and carpenters creating unique handmade furniture, artwork signs, clocks and frames etc... We take a look at what makes them so special.
A TAD TRENDI Kylie Donaldson (27) is the owner of 'A Tad Trendi'. She makes a range of clocks, photo frames, and "little stuff". She is also currently designing a range of watches.
Kylie started by making photo frames as Christmas gifts. Her husband joked that they looked great and she should try and sell them. Thinking little of it, she took them into a local shop and was met with an order for 400! Now her business, in its third year, is in full swing. By the second year she had tripled the first year's profits, and currently she fills around four bulk orders a day.
FUNKY FURNITURE The key people behind Funky Furniture Factory are Monique Cannon and Clay McKenzie. Monique has a Diploma in graphic design and worked in the advertising industry in Sydney before moving to Queensland.
Once on the Gold Coast, Monique started out making blackboards, which still account for half the business. From there she started creating art for people's homes. Then around 12 months ago she started Funky Furniture. Moniques partner, Clay, is a carpenter and builder by trade. He is responsible for the furniture building side of the business.
The Relationship between A Tad Trendi and Funky Furniture: Monique and Kylie met through a mutual friend, when Monique had decided to stop making her range of clocks. Kylie agreed to take over the clock making, and from there the relationship blossomed.
Kylie wanted to extend her product range so Monique assisted Kylie with her concepts. Kylie and Monique found by working together they provide a practical balance. Kylie formulates ideas, and Monique turns them into reality.
What's so unique about these products?- The team makes everything themselves.
- Extraordinary use of colour and bold designs.
- Each piece is unique.
- The 'chunky' look of Funky Furniture.
- The designers will create individual pieces to suit a client's needs/desires.
