Looking at an old factory or service station, you're not likely to think home. Well the owner of this warehouse did and with a little help from her brother, it was transformed into an amazing house.

When Vivien Reed bought this old warehouse it had already lived several lives. First a refrigeration factory, then a garage, the next logical step for Vivien was to make it a home. First she needed to employ an architect and Vivien couldn't think of anyone better than her brother Alan. He quickly agreed to mix business with pleasure and the siblings started the renovations.

Vivien wrote a brief outlining what she wanted from her new home — light, openness, an internal courtyard and best of all, surprises. Using the brief as a guide, Alan only needed one visit to the warehouse and he had a design in mind.

Vivien saw potential in the warehouse immediately and loved the idea of starting from scratch. She worked with Alan to design the décor, even creating a couple of pieces of furniture herself to make sure she got just what she wanted. Their aim was to create an innovative interior without competing with the design of the warehouse. Colours were chosen to create a flow through the home with furniture and decoration.

The façade of the warehouse has been virtually untouched, giving the home a great sense of arrival. Alan wanted Vivien to think about the emotional as well as the physical requirements to her new home. They decided to maintain the warehouse style choosing and industrial theme and even going so far as to graffiti a wall.

The warehouse has steel frames and a roof which was created to blend in with the industrial theme. Guests are greeted by a huge steel drawbridge, leading to an open courtyard overlooked by two towers. These are connected to the balcony by bridges, offering a great view. They house 2 bedrooms with ensuites and a loft.

Vivien bought the warehouse in 1997 and after only five months of renovations she was ready to move in. The process was relatively fast as Alan supervised the project and had his drawing board on site.
