Remember the Rubik's Cube? An intricate block of colours that could entertain for hours. Well that was the inspiration behind this Queensland beach house. Resembling an incomplete Rubik's Cube, this home won the Sunshine Coast House of the Year Award for 2000.
Brian Truswell bought the site of this unique home in 1988. Initially, Brian and his wife used the little weatherboard cottage as a weekender but soon decided to upgrade. The tiny cottage was towed to a new site on the back of a semi-trailer, leaving a vacant block for the architect to work his magic.
Archicentre provided Brian with the name of local architect, Graham Courtney and planning began. The owners wanted a beach theme with glimpses of the water, but left the rest up to Graham. The angular and colourful design Graham suggested was beyond belief and the owners loved it.
Building began in April 1999 and was finished by January 2000. The only changes Brian made to the original design was to convert the carport into a garage and move the position of the shower in the ensuite. The owners love the fact that their home is unique and not a carbon copy of any other property.
The house was built as high as legally possible to catch that glimpse of the ocean through the trees. The only worry now is that the trees will grow just a little bit taller and obscure the view. The owners also wanted guest accommodation away from the master bedroom, which Graham included in the design.
Graham had all the interior walls painted white but left the interior décor to Leesa Dwight. The interior is just as bold as the exterior but the owners wouldn't change a thing. Leesa used strong colours like purple, blue and orange, lit by small down lights. There are lots of couches and the dining area is furnished in simple timber chairs and a glass top table. Overall, the interior is sleek and clean.
To Graham, this house captures the essence of the Sunshine Coast and the playfulness of the beach. He likes to make an impact, but doesn't want to offend and this beach house certainly meets the criteria. It was fortunate that the owners gave Graham free range and trusted his instincts. In fact, they've gone on to become good friends.
This beach home won House of the Year 2000 for the Maroochydore Shire Awards, over $200,000.
