Chris Timms is a Melbourne craftsman who cleverly constructs cartoon-style furniture for kids. Our House checks out some of his work.
Chris is inspired by the humour and spirit of cartoon land. As a child, he was allowed to watch one television program a day and he always chose cartoons. Inspired, he then used to rush upstairs to his room and draw out his favourite creations on paper. Chris says that his furniture has to appear “as if it is moving”.
One favourite piece, a tallboy creation called “Sox and Jox”, has pieces of miniature “underwear” used as handles. All his works contain curved, smooth-flowing lines and are painted in garish primary colours. Items on display include a wild bedhead, colourful chest of drawers, groovy side table and an amazing clock.
Proportions, perspectives and even reality are all left behind in this fun pursuit of adventure.
