Roger Chadwick is a craftsman from the Sunshine Coast, NSW, specialising in carved timber doors, which some would say are more like works of art. Originally a "brickie" by profession for more than 10 years, Roger works with many different materials using his creative and visionary skills, together with a love of nature, to fashion doors out of solid timber.

Each door has some sort of natural carving incorporated into the design, together with individually designed handles in wrought iron and steel. His skills as a leadlighter are put to good use in the window designs, creating a unique viewing experience for the lucky owner.

Roger began his wood carving career after being less than inspired with the work of a local joinery in making a front door for his home. He felt he could do better himself, taking more than a month to make his first door. Roger claims it was the hardest but most enjoyable project he has ever worked on. After that experience there was no stopping him, with internal doors for the rest of his house being carved by him in a similar fashion. Deciding to branch out into business for himself, it had its ups and downs, and he nearly gave it up completely at times.

However in 1995, Roger used what little money he had to travel overseas and visit renowned door maker and carver James Hubbell. Roger was greatly inspired and put in much effort in developing his business. He made a set of double doors for his dentist in a prominent position, gaining much commercial exposure. Suddenly, he found orders came flooding in.

Roger works from photos when depicting plants or animals in his door carvings. With some of his more abstract projects, Roger says he works from the heart, but continues to use the flowing, spiral forms that have become his trademark. His largest job for one client to date was a total of 24 doors, not bad for an ex-brickie.
