Tucked away in trendy, inner-city Balmain, Sydney, are colourful examples of homes created by an innovative building, renovating and development team called Braams Property Services. The team includes interior designer Lesley Bofinger, and they have been designing and building homes for over 10 years.

The homes have a modern design feel and look, while complementing the surrounding period dwellings, some of which date back to the last century.

In one of their examples, the kitchen features highly glazed marine blue cupboards, while the other side of the kitchen presents white cupboards and stainless steel appliances — complete with small blue and white checkerboard tiles, which tie the two together well.

The blue theme continues upstairs with a pale blue suede finish on the staircase wall leading to two bedrooms and the bathroom, which features the same tile design as the kitchen. Feature walls or slab colours dominate the end of each bedroom. These are mainly to provide decorative highlights or "accent" the design process.

So how does Lesley go about her design process? She first selects a palette and then chooses colours that work well together. Colour placement is then decided on to suit the style and location of the property being built.

Adventurous and bright themes dominate the team's building work, which has come to be appreciated by many of the locals. Backyard walls that would otherwise go unnoticed are painted with scenic murals complementing the proximity to the city harbour. In some cases "views" are provided where none are visible. Other home-styles incorporate the colours used by famous artists such as Matisse.

The Huntingdale Drive complex, named after the home of the Australian Masters golf tournament, is another example of the team's unique talents. Each of the duplexes commemorates a tournament winner, and incorporates stylish colour and design features, such as triangular-shaped roof awnings providing shelter for the balconies underneath.

Discussing her design work, Lesley says that most people "either love it or hate it, but at least there is a reaction to it".
