We take a look at the Sydney home of Angelike Swift, a ceramic sculptor, who has effectively used bold colour combinations throughout her two-story house to completely change its look.
Renovations took around one year to complete, with Angelike and her family reluctantly living among the mess. Sandstone-composite tiles were laid as flooring and to retain their natural appearance and "feel", placed on a bed of sand and cement without the use of grouting.
The kitchen, stairwell, hallway and main bedroom are painted in a vibrant yellow while a rich eggplant colour is used in the lounge room. One of her son's rooms is painted lime. Turquoise is used for the stair panel and bathroom tiles.
Three small dark rooms were knocked into one large living area and features made of the large support beams needed for the job (painted violet). This large area sweeps back to an elevated courtyard. Here her sculptures and pots, inspired by the myths of the ancient Greeks and Romans, help create a Mediterranean feel.
One of Angelike's clever design ideas was used in the bathroom. Fold-out translucent wardrobe-like doors open out into the corridor to enlarge the bathroom area, while still retaining privacy. Glass building blocks have been built into the walls to let in natural light, while a glass sink further enhances the open design.
Angelike says that strong colours "give a house light and warmth, you've just got to be brave and experiment until you achieve the desired effect".
