Formica laminate was first introduced worldwide in 1927. Australia had to wait another 20 years before its introduction here. The particular design technology used in this 'digital' laminate is a world first for Australia.

The laminates have always come in a wide range of designs and choices, however the difference is that now you can design your own. In the example featured, the owners wish to replace the original '70s burnt orange kitchen laminate bench top with a more up-to-date look.

They are guaranteed to be different as they are designing their own, using Formica Digital Laminate. This is available in a number of laminate grades and surface finishes. Here is the design process.

1
You need to invent your own design. This can consist of any colours, patterns or even photos. You may want to hire a graphic designer to help with the final stages of your design, and a number of different computer graphics programs can be used.

2
Once you are happy with your design, it gets sent to a production company to be printed onto special paper. This is then laminated to let the design show through.

You need to give the sizes of the surfaces to be covered with the laminate so that your design is printed onto the correct laminate sheet sizes. Customers need to allow 21 working days from receipt of order.

3
The old bench tops are then removed and the new laminate applied. It is attached to a substrate (particle board/MDF), cut to size and installed by a fabricator or kitchen company. This normally takes around half a day to complete.

Cost
This is determined by the type of design project and is based on a rate of $140 per square metre of printed area. In the example featured: Cost of feature top: $235 Cost of the bench top: $495 Total laminate cost: $730. Normal laminate would have cost $229, as a comparison. Please note that the cost of installation and graphic design work is not included. Designers can be hired for around $55 per hour.
