Graeme Bassett, who is not a formally trained furniture maker, began making wardrobe villages five years ago. Inspired by French magazine Photo, he created his first village out of an old wardrobe and placed it on the verandah. Encouraged by friends, his second design sold within two days.

Graeme has since sold around 30 wardrobe villages which have been sent as far as Japan and New York. They have been used as wardrobes, bookshelves, TV cabinets and even wine cellars.

Using second-hand wardrobes found at furniture stores or garage sales, Graeme first sands them down, removing any hinges and handles. These are replaced later if needed. He then traces a design to suit the shape and lines of the furniture.

The windows and doors of his village designs are built up using balsa wood, matchsticks and ice-cream sticks. The matchsticks are also used to fill in the finer details of his designs. Craft wood is often glued on top of the matches to give further depth to his work.

The roofs are made of plywood. Two coats of acrylic paint and a limewash tops off the design. Finer paint details (windows, shop names, people, etc) are then applied with a fine brush. Sometimes fabrics are glued on for realism.

Some customers personalise their wardrobes by having their names included in the streets and shops. The wardrobe village is then given two to three coats of matt varnish. Villages generally take between 30-50 hours to make.

Cost
Prices range from about $260 to over $1000 (not including transportation).
