If you are a bit of a wine buff you will be interested to know that you can now buy furniture made from recycled wine barrels.

Ben Killerby from Killerby Vineyards, one of the oldest family vineyards in the south west of Western Australia, came up with the idea of reusing old oak wine barrels.

These oak barrels are imported from France and are hand-crafted using techniques that are more than 1,000 years old. The wood is pale in colour and carefully shaved and carved into shape. No glue is used in the crafting, instead each stave fits tightly and is secured with hoops of iron which wrap around the barrel, making it watertight.

Normally, the barrels, costing up to $1,400 each, are scrapped after several years' usage. After Ben failed a few attempts at making chairs himself, he came up with the idea of running the Killerby Vineyard Cabernet Chairs competition, in which 25 designers were invited to turn the used wine barrels into works of art that you can sit on.

The prize money was $5,000. Ideally, Ben would like Australia to commercialise the use of old wine barrels for furniture. All the designers enjoyed the challenge, apparently one or two becoming intoxicated along the way due to the retention of the alcohol fumes in the barrels!

Cost
Killerby Cabernet chairs are for sale from $1,000.
