The VDL Store is in Stanley, on the remote north-west coast of Tasmania. Stanley was originally settled in 1826 and was the headquarters for the Van Diemens Land Company. One of the first tasks for the VDL company was to build a store and customs house near the harbour for incoming settlers.
Stanley has survived almost intact as a 19th-century town. These days it is the base for a fishing fleet working in Bass Strait. It is also the home of a small population of artists who have turned the original VDL company store into a unique workshop and gallery.
Mark Bishop started wood-turning in his parents' garage 14 years ago. He then went to art school, where his work focused on more sculptural pieces. Mark now creates his work in the gallery and sells them throughout Australia in collections and exhibitions. Using only native Tasmanian timbers, he creates works ranging from functional domestic items to purely sculptural works.
Another artist at the VDL Store is furniture-maker Toby Muir Wilson. Toby's practical, finely crafted work reflects the love he has for Tasmanian timber. His furniture retains the organic form in geometric structures. He uses landscape themes to create unique pieces of furniture.
Stanley's remoteness is one of the main reasons why the town has changed so little in more than 170 years. For these artists, their isolation is probably their greatest inspiration.
