Wood sculptor Ian Swift has been honing his craft for 20 years. Last year he opened a gallery at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains of NSW to showcase his sculptural furniture. His current work includes many "pets", mainly dogs, going about their daily lives.

He was inspired to make these pet sculptures after he adopted Jack, his blue heeler dog. With love similar to that of a father for his newborn child, Ian crafted around 30 dog sculptures in three months, using recycled materials. He says old timber has a feeling of history which is reborn using his skills.

His materials include commonly discarded items such as coat-hangers, furniture legs, buttons, pegs, hatstand pieces, wooden industrial moulds and patterns.

Ian usually begins making a pet by finding a piece of furniture or architectural moulding that suggests a head or body, and then adds features and personality as he goes. His gallery collection contains three cats, two cockatoos, a horse, an elephant, two lions and about 10 dog sculptures. Each piece has its own personality!

Some of Ian's other work includes coffee tables, stools, bookshelves, lamps and chairs. One interesting piece is a table made from bowling club honour boards dated 1932. These boards are glued together after first being cut up, to form the table top. The names can still be clearly read.

Cost
Prices for the pets range from $70-$150.
