Ian De Souza is a prominent artist who bases himself in Perth but also travels internationally each year. He came to Australia from Malaysia and Singapore when he was 15 to study in a seminary college in Galong, NSW.
After completing his studies, and an international singing career, which saw him based in the south of France, Ian returned to his first love, painting, after the success of his first art exhibition in Singapore in 1979. 1 Settling in Perth, Ian started painting seriously, completing his first water colour in just 18 hours. He is self-taught and although a water colourist, he's used all painting mediums. Collectors of his work talk about his gift with "light" and comment on the "joy and energy" mirrored in his art.
2 Ian's home, originally built in 1890 and renovated by him in 1985, is surrounded by a high, limestone courtyard wall, with a rammed earth studio contained on a brick paved area. Outside sits a rust-red Citroen "Classic 15" car which is positioned to match the entrance wall of the same colour.
3 The home comprises this courtyard walled area, which can be best described as "inside out" living.
4 Ian and his partner, Roslyn, sleep out in the summer months, surrounded by a red and yellow converted railway carriage, lush vegetation, ponds, waterfalls, trees, a huge pergola and a massive 5m long dining table, made from an old mining cart.
5 It is complete with wheels and a railway track. This permits easy mobility across the courtyard for entertaining in all seasons.
6 Ian treats his home and garden like his works of art and describes his living conditions as his inner sanctum. During his travels around the world he has collected some rare and valuable items.
7 These include a 400-year-old door from a 16th century French farm house, a large Greek olive pot, which is 150-years-old, and a weathered antique set of Sri Lankan doors framed in blue paint.
8 Ian exhibits in WA, Victoria, NSW and the USA and teaches basic drawing and watercolour classes in his garden studio on a weekly basis.
