Nic Fern is a Brisbane artist who was never formerly trained in art. It was when she fell pregnant with daughter Mackenzie and could no longer continue as an aerobics instructor that she started painting. It all started when Nic gave her mother a framed painting for Mother's Day.

Nic's husband Kurt has now given up full time carpentry to concentrate on framing her artwork and helping out with exhibitions. After painting for three years, Nic took on the idea of turning their whole house in Brisbane into a showcase of her work, a giant 'canvas' in fact. She sees it as an extension of how she works on the canvas and a way of creating and maintaining a happy atmosphere.

1
From the outside, the two-bedroom cottage doesn't look out of the ordinary. It is quite hidden from the street and the exterior is a slate blue colour.

2
But it is once you step inside that the house really comes alive. There is not a white wall in sight. The entry to the open-plan home is Mayan yellow. You are greeted with 1.5m x 1.5m mural of a bowl of oranges and stars.

3
The living room is surrounded with orange walls which clash with red, blue and yellow leather lounges. Nic admits it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it works for them!

4
The main bedroom is jade green with blue trim around the windows. The room has colourful leadlight windows of blue flowers and rectangles of coloured glass that Nic designed herself. Instead of a door, the room has a screen that is painted with animals and bright colours. The dining room is electric lime.

5
Next comes the kitchen which is a daring mix of colour including bright blue and pink. The tiles are also painted and were fired in a friend's pizza oven. The bathroom walls are painted blue, the outside of the bath aqua green and the door painted yellow with a white flower.

6
The skirting boards and architraves around the house are white for contrast and to make the colours appear even brighter.

7
Nic says that even if they move, because of their colourful furniture and artwork, colour will always travel with them.
