Carlos Sanchez is a "wood artisan", or cabinet-maker, who works from his base at Mudjimba, on the Sunshine Coast. He has established his reputation by crafting some very original and eye-catching pieces from various timbers.

1
His workshop makes a huge range of timber furniture, mirror frames and one-off commissions for designers and architects, and at least half are for interstate orders. The pieces are distinctive because of the creative and amazing use of colour and painted finishes, sometimes combining many different timbers in the one item.

2
Ready for a change in life, Carlos moved from California, where he had been making furniture, to Guatemala. After much travelling in Central America, he and his family settled on the Sunshine Coast in 1991. He started off making mirrors for the popular Eumundi markets, and still operates a stall there every Saturday.

3
Since his business started, Carlos's style has changed to incorporate other materials, such as glass, ceramics and stones, as well as the use of multiple timbers in the one piece. Even "squiggles" of aluminium are often inlaid in the timber, which is then textured and coloured in different ways. Making handles from cast aluminium to look like silvered wood is yet another example. All the materials he uses are new and are purchased from Brisbane suppliers. One example of his work is a set of entry doors for the Curry-Kenny (of swimming and Iron Man fame) residence.

3
Carlos is inspired by the shapes and colours of nature, especially summer and autumn tones. He has also derived a lot of inspiration from the architecture and lifestyle of the many places he has lived. Examples include the contemporary lines of San Francisco, the lively colours and Spanish colonial influence of Mexico and Guatemala, and the open beach homes of Costa Rica.
