Splinter Workshop is a unique set up. It consists of ten experienced designers and furniture makers who work together in a kind of co-operative situation, but who all function as sole traders. The members of Splinter Workshop include a musician, a tourist guide, a menswear manager, an aerospace engineer, a mechanic and a horticulturist. What they all have in common is a passion for designing and making fine woodwork.
Splinter Workshop was set in 1996 up by three graduates of the fine woodwork course at Sturt School For Wood. Phil Boddington, Georgina Ligertwood and Julia Charles wanted to set up a workshop together in Sydney and other ex-students gradually joined in. Only one of the ten members did not study at Sturt.
The pieces made at Splinter Workshop are mainly one-offs and commissions, Julia says the way they justify the use of the timber is to remember that they are making products of high quality that will hopefully be cherished by the owners and possibly handed down as family heirlooms.
Advantages of Splinter Workshop For Members: 1 Being able to pool resources. None of the members would be able to work in such an environment, as it would be too expensive. They can all share the costs of buying equipment and can buy materials in bulk. 2 Ten members means ten brains and a whole lot of combined experience, so they can all bounce ideas off each other. Considering their varied backgrounds, they all help out in different ways. 3 When it comes to marketing they can create more of an impact as a group and are able to organise larger scale events. 4 A friendly but competitive rivalry keeps the standard high. 5 Working in a gender balanced environment keeps discussions flowing. 6 You are never short of a helping hand having others in the workshop to help lift or glue!!
For Clients: Clients can get custom made, high quality furniture to suit their needs. They can meet with the designer/maker, come into the workshop and become involved with the project, if they want to develop a greater understanding of the whole process.
