Even though the frame around a picture needs to look good, its main role is to protect and enhance the artwork. Our House visits Framing Corner, where Suzie tries her hand at DIY framing with the help of the owner, Ian Anderson. We find out how to make the best of your pictures and get a few tips on professional framing.
Framing Corner opened in Chatswood as a corporate store and in 1986 it began operating as a franchise. There are now stores over Australia including Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane and Sydney. All materials used by Framing Corner are acid free and the core of their business is about preserving their clients' work, and achieving the best possible look to suit the individual and the photo or print.
Over the years Framing Corner has had many unusual requests and some very tricky framing jobs. They have framed a piece of the Berlin Wall, a pair of jeans, a piece of a dinosaur's egg and a stainless steel pin removed from someone's hip. One customer even framed a Big Mac for her boyfriend, which had to be microwaved to dry it out and then preserved with lacquer. Apparently the trickiest bit was the lettuce which didn't microwave well and had to be replaced with a very clever look alike.
Framing Corner runs a DIY (do-it-yourself) service, where customers can enjoy framing their own work with the expert advice of the Framing Corner team. You can be guided through the framing process without having to do any of the tough work yourself, as the experts cut the timber, glass and coloured matboards and show you how to use all the necessary tools and materials.
Some thought needs to go into the following areas when framing your precious artwork, photo, or print:
Matboards: Matboards, otherwise known as mounts, mountboard or mats, are used to enhance and protect the artwork. Framing Corner uses matboards that are buffered acid free, which means that the artwork won't discolour over time. Matboards come in many different colours so it can be difficult to know what to choose. Framing Corner can offer advice on what would suit your home and can help determine what type of effect you are after. Using colours next to each other on the colour wheel will have a calming effect, while colours that are directly opposite each other on the colour wheel will have more of a dramatic effect
Backing: The backing behind the artwork or photo also helps preservation. Framing Corner uses lightweight materials that are neutral pH instead of a backing that was once very popular made from composite timber. This was made from wood pulp and held together with glues which can be extremely acidic and can cause yellowing and small spots called foxing.
Framing: The colours of the borders and the type of frame you choose depends largely on where the picture will hang, what décor and colour schemes it is going into. Customers can choose from wooden, gilt and metal frames. It is important to remember when you are choosing a frame that your eyes should be drawn immediately to the artwork or photo and the frame and matboard should complement the overall effect.
Glass: It is important to ensure that the artwork or photo you are framing doesn't touch the glass. This is because moisture condenses on the inside of the glass and can cause the fabric to mildew and rot. Photos can stick to the glass but Framing Corner offers a service that can restore photos that have been damaged in this way. Customers can choose regular glass, non-reflective or a UV blocking glass.
Reversibility: This means that works should be able to be taken out of the frame unharmed and untouched. This is very important when framing artworks, especially those that are precious family heirlooms, originals or limited editions. All photos are framed so they are reversible.
