Our House meets a man with a true passion and dedication to his business. Antique dealer Kevin Danzey started his business 20 years ago with a stall at Paddington Bazaar and today runs his import business 'The Black Sheep Antiques' with wife Leonie. Together the pair do all the work themselves, from sourcing the pieces, to restoration and both are even auctioneers!

Kevin travels overseas every six weeks to search for new pieces. His travels have taken him to places such as Latvia, Romania, Moldova, North Africa, Canada and America. Kevin says he always flies 'third' class which to him means taking the worst seat on the plane and he also has been known to sleep in the back of a truck in order to source his provincial antiques.

Kevin's purchases involve a lot of bartering and negotiation and while he can count in most languages he says haggling isn't his greatest skill. In some parts of the world the gypsies will get upset if he won't haggle. They see it as missing out on all the fun if you don't bargain. Kevin says the gypsies love that moment when they agree to his price, however, it makes it difficult when he is in a hurry.

Although it was quite a struggle to make it on his own, Kevin has always enjoyed what he does. Together Kevin and Leonie choose pieces that they like the look of and purposely don't choose conventional furniture. They therefore have a shed full of quirky pieces that you wouldn't find in a standard antique shop. They have painted furniture, wrought iron, Oriental and Art Deco pieces that Kevin and Leonie restore or repair in some way. The biggest bargain they have at the moment is a light fitting which was found in a skip bin along Brighton Beach. It came out of a restaurant at Brighton Le Sands Hotel and both agree that it is spectacular.
