After retirement Olga Gostin was looking for something new to do with her time. After long being fascinated with architecture, especially that of Victorian and Federation style homes, she started taking photos and then painting homes and buildings she found interesting.
Olga arrived in Australia 50 years ago and found a country that didn't quite meet her expectations. Olga had expected a very modern city with large square buildings and units but instead she found a country rich in architectural history.
Olga was born in China and studied in a French school in Shanghai. There she was introduced to painting although it wasn't until she retired that art became her serious passion. Olga painted more than three hundred paintings from 1981-1991 — each taking approximately 30 hours. Olga says that she understands why many wouldn't want to paint like she does as it can be very time consuming but capturing the fine detail is Olga's main objective.
Olga's memory is aided by her photographs that she recreates in sketch form before adding the colour. Any blemishes such as telegraph poles or ill fitting additions are edited out. Olga's son and daughter-in-law returned home from Canada to discover her works and have since been marketing them on the Internet to an international audience. The trio have had interest from the British, Americans and Canadians who say they didn't realise Australia had this heritage. Olga keeps the originals for herself but you can buy prints for around $25.
