Sit Up! 100 Masterpieces is the name of this exhibition which has over one hundred chairs on display. Each chair was selected for the part it's played in the development of furniture design from 1850 to the present day.

The chairs are made from every material imaginable, plastic, wood, PVC, canvas and even concrete.

Most of the chair designers come from overseas. One Australian design by Mark Newson, called the Lockheed Lounge, looks like the wing of a plane. It was featured in one of Madonna's video clips.

Today, we take the stackable chair for granted, but back in 1926 they were made from pressed metal and look fairly uncomfortable.

Another golden oldie is the Bentwood chair, named for the curved sections at the back, designed in Vienna almost 140 years ago. It is still in production today.

Some chairs represent social movements such as Pop Art, Art Nouveau and Post Modernism. Some have become cultural icons of their own era. The bean bag, for example, has always represented the laid back and alternative attitude from the 1960's and is represented in this exhibition as the prototype called the "sacco".
