The owners of this 1920's house have gone against the renovating trend of remaining faithful to the period that the house was built in.

The main renovations were done by architect, Simon Thornton, while the kitchen featured was designed by fellow architect, Dianne Peacock.

The cartoonish look of the kitchen was in part inspired by a dress she saw worn by Kathleen Hanna of the band Bikini Kill.

The overlapping and contrasting colours in the kitchen came from the trim around the dress openings for the arms, neck and pockets. Dianne says that this produced a layering of ideas and further developed the sculptured forms of the house extension.

The cabinet handles and oddly shaped drawers were built by a cabinet maker. To ensure the curves and shapes were correct, Dianne did all the design drawings in a 1:1 scale.

Some unusual features include the stainless steel rangehood that looks more like a ships' funnel or part of an Apollo space mission.

The curved bench tops have sloping edges finishing in a point and the pantry slants inwards as it rises. The windows above the sink have no uniform shape and the internal curved wall doesn't quite reach the ceiling.

Despite its look, this kitchen is still very functional. Even the spice rack is contained within a space on the inside of the kitchen pantry door, and there is a slim cupboard for chopping boards.
So remember when it comes to renovating your house, sometimes there really are no rules!
