A group of 28 artists, architects and designers were given the challenge of designing a cabinet that reflects the geography and climate of south-east Queensland.
Bill Haycock, a set designer, created a small rustic piece from driftwood and other scrap timber. His inspiration came from memories of happy holidays at the seaside. He wanted to create a cabinet that had an outdoors feel.
Shane Thompson, an architect, was keen to make something fun and functional. The cabinet, made from steel, copper, cast aluminium and MDF, has numerous compartments and appears to have been inspired by images of Ned Kelly. Shane hopes to mass-produce the design.
Nicole Voevodin-Cash, a visual artist, has designed a bedside table that encourages people to touch its smooth, clean, rounded surfaces. Nicknamed "George the Fridge", the work has sexual connotations and appeals to our voyeuristic tendencies.
Bruce Reynolds, an artist, calls his piece "Monday". It is a hoop pine cabinet with a large oval mirror placed on top. The mirror has been blasted with a moonscape image. Bruce explains that the piece is a symbol of melancholy - when people look in the mirror they are encouraged to contemplate themselves and their relationship to the environment.
