If you're looking for something a little more interesting than common timber floorboards or a plain parquetry design, you can't go past Melbourne craftsman, Rasul Family. Persian born Rasul moved to Australia nine years ago and while working in his brother-in-law's tree surgery business, became fascinated by the colours and textures of Australian timbers.
With a lifelong love of timber, Rasul was so inspired by Australian varieties that he decided to do something different. He went on to complete a Diploma of Art in wood design, then started his own business, Cheubin Design, specialising in timber floor art (Cheubin is a Persian word meaning wood).
Rasul believes a wood floor can be more beautiful than carpets or furniture. His art is to create richly toned timber "carpets" as centre pieces, decorative features or borders. Using jarrah, brushbox, and Tasmanian oak, Rasul can transform any floor into a piece of art. He finds his inspiration in everyday life, including shapes, paintings, pictures and nature. Rasul can transfer almost any design imaginable to the floor including logos, portraits, Persian designs, Celtic, medieval and ancient patterns.
To create one of his floors, Rasul projects the desired image onto the wall of his workshop using an overhead projector. He then traces the design onto paper to make a template. Rasul also scans the design into a computer in order to add colour and tone. Next, suitable timber is chosen to match the final colours and tones. The timber is cut according to the design and the pieces are put together like a jigsaw and glued in place. If the job is large, each piece of timber is numbered and transferred to the site. The pieces are stuck to the floor, not together, allowing the timber to expand and contract.
Rasul can transfer almost any design onto wood, whether it be a company logo, portrait, or authentic medieval or ancient patterns. With the use of a few simple carpentry tools and special saws, Rasul creates the unique designs in his workshop and transports them to their new home for display.
