With modern artworks, multicultural furnishings and a different colour on nearly every wall, this terrace house is a work of art. Nola has transformed this old backpackers into a spacious and exotic home. Her previous dwelling was painted in neutral shades so she jumped at the opportunity to use a rainbow of colours. Each room is strikingly different, with multi-coloured walls and exotic furniture from around the world.
The designer draws inspiration for this colourful house from her overseas travel. The furnishings have changed over the years as Nola finds more and more pieces she just can't resist. Some of Nola's favourite pieces are actually earmarked for customers. A running family joke says you shouldn't put your feet on the coffee table as Nola may run out of stock and be forced to sell it to a client.
Nola's unique furniture includes antique French chairs, a Portuguese bed and an Indonesian seat. The home's furnishings have changed so much over the years that the children have written a list of favourites they want mum to keep.
The front door opens into a large formal lounge room. This was originally three rooms which have been knocked into one. The room is a kaleidoscope of colour, with bright yellow walls and large colourful paintings. A glass topped coffee table and cream French antique chairs sit on the polished floorboards. There is also an Indonesian wood carved seat and a dark teal green sofa (made especially for this room) for contrast.
The simple teak kitchen has terrazzo bench tops and looks towards the dining area with its warm, round timber table, dark cane chairs and heated Egyptian Limestone floor. The walls are white, but the blue trim around the French doors adds colour and opens onto a tropical outdoor entertainment area.
The entertaining area is raised and paved with a timber setting and bright cushions. It is surrounded by lush palms and plants and has the added luxury of a bubbling spa. A small staircase leads to a studio apartment which has a mystical atmosphere, with dark green walls, stark white ceiling and a splash of red and orange. This secret hideaway is best viewed by candlelight.
A bright orange corridor leads to the master bedroom, which has been opened to include the verandah. A Portuguese bed with gilded wooden bed head is an attractive feature of the room. The walls are lined with gold and black vertical striped wallpaper.
The bathroom walls are dark black and contrast with the rest of the house. It is fitted with teak and metal mesh paneled doors. The room is lightened by white and grey marble and a skylight positioned directly over the bath.
