There are wedding bells in the air at the Brisbane City Gallery and everyone's invited to witness the union. It's the unusual marriage of sculpture and contemporary furniture, and the result is magnificent. This new art is the inspiration behind a national exhibition titled Against the Grain Australian Sculptural Furniture.
Against the Grain will be on show in Brisbane until the 12th of November, 2000. The exhibition has been developed by the Gallery's Craft Curator, Kirsten Fitzpatrick, and is the first of kind in Australian to survey contemporary furniture that has a sculptural component.
The exhibition features new works by 27 Australian sculptors and furniture makers. Much of the furniture is inventive, original and witty, with many works reflecting aspects of Australian life through idiosyncratic form and the use of humour.
One man showcasing his art is Sebastian di Mauro. His work is titled Loll and is made of 1000 stainless steel pot scourers. Sebastian is one of Brisbane's contemporary installation artists.
Also on show is Tom Risley's monumental dining table and chairs. Made from driftwood, the table stretches four metres long, while the chairs stand almost four metres high. And, if you're looking for something to lean on, there's Wayne Hudson's iron and leather Bum Rests, which the artist made specifically for Aussies.
Each artist has a distinctive style. Their materials range from steel wool to wood to bone. Most have a tertiary background in sculpture or furniture making and their works blend the two arts perfectly.
