The art of studio glass making originated in Germany more than 150 years ago. The artform has been in Australia for just 25 years but our glass is already in demand. Distinctive Australian glass art will soon set sail for Germany, where it will be displayed at the Galerie Handwerk.

At the Edge is a project which began in 1998. German curators, Peter Nickl and Wolfgang Loeshe, were amazed by Australia's studio glass and immediately began moves for an exhibition in Germany. The result was At the Edge, a showcase of more than 50 pieces from 26 prominent Australian artists. Many of the artists exhibit regularly in Europe and the United States and have won major awards for their work.

The aim of the exhibition is to promote the outstanding quality of Australian glass and to demonstrate the range of experimental approaches to glass making. The artworks reflect views and interpretations of Australian society and experiences.

The studio glass movement has been influenced by a multitude of cultures and traditions, including Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and the United States. Australia has no cultural commitments to these traditions, which has enabled artists to create diverse and inventive pieces.

Glass arrived in Australia in the 18th Century and an Aboriginal glass practice quickly emerged in the Kimberley. Aborigines made spearheads with glass points, examples of which are displayed in the At the Edge exhibition. This is the first time these artifacts have been presented as Australian glass art.

Australian glass art is fresh and bold with one of the most dominant influences on the art in Australia being the landscape, particularly its light and colour.
