It is hard to imagine two very different architecture specialists compromising to work on one house. Well, Davina Jackson and her partner Chris Johnson have done just that, and the result is a house of colour. The couple's combined creativity, energy and passion for design is reflected in this unique home.

"Living colour" would be an apt description for this home. The interior palette is stunning; complementing Chris's passion for collecting artefacts from decades of overseas travel. The living space includes custom-made hemp fabric on the lounges and an extensive collection of Asmat shields.

Davina considers herself the colourist, but has changed the palette to suit Chris' tribal influences. The central courtyard reflects Davina's bold approach to colour with a claret wall and sun-yellow butterfly chairs. It provides a tranquil escape from frantic inner city life. Chris has created a museum-like study surrounded by his collection of eastern and tribal artefacts

Davina and Chris are die-hard city dwellers, so to combat the noise off the street, they have focussed the house inwards. The living areas open onto a north facing linear courtyard. This is symmetrical, with neat-boxed hedges surrounding the outdoor dining area.

According to Davina, she is a yuppie and Chris is a hippie. The house is a merging of the two personalities and lifestyles. And the house isn't the only project they've worked on as a team — they recently launched a new book called Australian Architecture Now.

Chris is the government architect of NSW and Davina is a former editor of Architecture Australia. Davina promotes Australian design around the world via a series of lectures. She also put together an exhibition of young architects, titled "40 Up: Australian Architecture's Next Generation."

Australian Architecture Now retails for approximately $95 and is available at good bookstores.
