With 25 years experience, glass artist Nick Mount from South Australia is recognised as a leader in his field of glass design. We take a look at his Brisbane exhibition which showcases his latest work.
Most of the examples are made up of blown glass, which has been cut, polished and laminated to achieve striking effects. Over-size perfume bottles have been sculpted using a variety of hot and cold glass techniques. One of the largest is 820mm high, and the designs include both classical and abstract shapes.
Most of his colouring and blowing methods are based on traditional Venetian techniques. Even though he uses these traditional methods, Nick's work has a contemporary look of its own. His brand line of glass tableware is called Budgeree, and an example of this can be seen at the Art Gallery of South Australia.
During his career, Nick has received many awards. The most recent was the prestigious 1996 Bavarian State Prize. Nick trains other artists who are interested in his glass-blowing techniques, both locally and overseas.
