Puzzle Designs create silverware that are more like works of art. Their trademark puzzles prove that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. After arriving in Australia from Italy in the seventies, Ilaria and Angiolo Logi were inspired by the native wildlife and surroundings, and so began their silver jewellery design business.

Through the craft of silversmithing they are able to express themselves; twigs and branches become forks and spoons, while animals and sea-life are intertwined into intricate patterns, as part of larger puzzle shapes. Angiolo designs most of the work while Ilaria handles the business side. Although they have now branched out into designing such items as key rings, letter openers, paper weights, necklaces, earrings, platters, brooches and dinner sets, their first design was the well-known "Australia" puzzle.

There are now around 10 different puzzle designs to choose from, including the land and seas puzzle, miniature puzzle and the didgeridoo puzzle. The Australia Puzzle was presented to Queen Elizabeth by PM Bob Hawke to commemorate her 60th birthday. Other celebrity clients include Harrison Ford, Stevie Wonder, Mikhail Gorbachev and Greta Scacchi.

The Creative Process

After Angiolo finishes his sketch, he makes a rubber mould. This is then injected with hot wax. The resulting wax patterns are then encased in plaster moulds and placed in a kiln where the wax melts and is "lost", leaving its shape as a negative inside the mould.

Silver is then heated in a furnace where the temperature is strictly controlled and the red-hot liquid metal is poured from a crucible into the plaster moulds. After the metal has cooled, the moulds are broken and the pieces cleaned, selected, filed and sanded. Finally they are polished and great attention is paid to their detailed features.

One of the most amazing pieces in the store is their silver Boab Tree which was designed for a 40th wedding anniversary. It was specially designed to hold 13 portraits in its branches and leaves.
